The short answer

If your site is on Vercel and you only want pageviews, Vercel Analytics is the easiest choice. If you want goals on the free plan, longer history, revenue and errors, or you might move hosts later, Datasense is the better fit.

Pick Datasense if

  • Your site isn't on Vercel, or might move
  • You want custom events and goals without a Pro plan
  • You want revenue and JavaScript errors next to traffic
  • You want a realtime view and visitor journeys

Pick Vercel Analytics if

  • Your site is on Vercel and you want zero setup
  • You also use Vercel Speed Insights
  • Basic pageviews are all you need

What's different, in plain words

Works on any host

Vercel Analytics is tied to your Vercel project. Datasense is one script tag, so it works on Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, your own server or a website builder.

More than pageviews

On Vercel's free Hobby plan you can't track custom events, and history is limited to one month. Datasense shows goals, revenue by source, JavaScript errors and AI crawler visits.

Ad blockers

Both tools can load from your own domain. On Vercel it's built in. With Datasense you add two rewrites, and there are copy-paste recipes for Next.js and Vercel.

Pricing

Vercel Web Analytics is free on Hobby with 50k events a month. On Pro ($20 a month), events cost $0.03 per 1k and come out of your usage credit. Datasense is free up to 10k pageviews, then $9 a month for 100k on any host.

How to switch from Vercel Analytics

It takes about five minutes, and you don't have to turn anything off on day one.

  1. Step 1

    Add the Datasense script

Create a free account and paste one script tag into your site's <head>. Leave Vercel Analytics where it is for now.

  2. Step 2

    Run both for a week

Compare visitors, top pages and sources. Datasense often shows more visitors once the proxy is on, because ad blockers stop blocking it.

  3. Step 3

    Remove Vercel Analytics

When you're happy, delete the Vercel Analytics snippet. Export your old data from Vercel Analytics first if you want to keep it.

Questions people ask

Datasense is a good fit if you want more than pageviews, like goals, revenue and errors, or if you host somewhere other than Vercel.

Run Datasense next to Vercel Analytics for a week

Add one script tag, compare the numbers, then keep the one you like. The free plan is enough to test it.
