Plausible vs Datasense

Plausible is a simple, cookieless Google Analytics alternative, and it's a good one. Datasense shares the idea of one clean page. It uses cookies by default to spot returning visitors, and one setting makes it cookieless like Plausible. It also adds a free plan, JavaScript error tracking, AI crawler stats and visitor journeys.

The short answer

Plausible is mature, open source and can be self-hosted. Datasense gives you more for the money: a free plan, 100k pageviews for $9, and errors, bots and revenue in the same dashboard.

Pick Datasense if

  • You want to start free, not with a trial
  • You want 100k pageviews for $9 instead of 10k
  • You want JavaScript errors and AI crawler visits in the same place
  • You want to see a single visitor's path through your site

Pick Plausible if

  • You want an open-source tool you can self-host
  • You need your data kept in the EU
  • You want to import your old Google Analytics data

What's different, in plain words

Privacy and a bit more insight

Plausible sets no cookies and doesn't need a cookie banner. Datasense uses cookies by default, which usually means a banner in the EU and UK, but you can switch any site to cookieless mode and skip it. Plausible stops at totals by design. Datasense also lets you open one visitor and see the pages they read, visit by visit, without storing raw IP addresses.

Errors and AI crawlers

Datasense shows the last 100 JavaScript errors on your site, with the page and browser. It can also show which AI crawlers read your pages. Plausible doesn't do either, so you'd need extra tools.

Revenue on every paid plan

In Plausible, revenue goals are part of the Business plan. In Datasense, revenue tracking works with Stripe, Dodo Payments or any provider, and payments are tied to the visit that brought the buyer.

Pricing

Plausible has no free cloud plan. It starts at $9 a month for 10k pageviews after a 30-day trial. Datasense is free up to 10k pageviews a month, and $9 a month covers 100k pageviews on up to 10 sites. Plausible's self-hosted Community Edition is free if you run your own server.

How to switch from Plausible

It takes about five minutes, and you don't have to turn anything off on day one.

  1. Step 1

    Add the Datasense script

Create a free account and paste one script tag into your site's <head>. Leave Plausible where it is for now.

  2. Step 2

    Run both for a week

Compare visitors, top pages and sources. Datasense often shows more visitors once the proxy is on, because ad blockers stop blocking it.

  3. Step 3

    Remove Plausible

When you're happy, delete the Plausible snippet. Export your old data from Plausible first if you want to keep it.

Questions people ask

Datasense is a close match if you like Plausible's simple style but want a free plan, error tracking and more pageviews for the price. It can also run cookieless with one setting. Fathom and Umami are other good options.
