Cookieless & First-Party Cookie Web Analytics in One Toggle

Cookies make returning visitors easy to count, but in the EU and UK analytics cookies usually need consent. Datasense lets each site choose: first-party cookies for the most accurate counts, or a cookieless script that stores nothing on the device. It's one setting, and the rest of the dashboard works the same.

How cookieless tracking works

Nothing stored on the device

The cookieless script sets no cookies and no localStorage IDs. A per-tab session ID lives in sessionStorage and is gone when the tab closes.

Unique visitors without cookies

The server hashes a salt that changes every day with the site ID, IP address and user agent. The IP address itself is never stored.

The same dashboard

Sources, UTM campaigns, pages, goals, errors and revenue all work in cookieless mode. Session replay and forms work too.

Private in both modes

Raw IP addresses are never written to disk, only country, region and city. No fingerprinting and no cross-site tracking, and visitors can opt out.

How to switch to cookieless analytics

  1. Step 1

    Open Settings → Tracking

New sites start in cookie mode. Pick cookieless for the site you want to switch.

  2. Step 2

    Use the cookieless script

The tag changes to /js/script.js, which stores nothing on the device. Switching deletes the cookies the other script set.

  3. Step 3

    Review your cookie banner

If Datasense was the only thing setting cookies, you may not need a banner anymore. Check with your own adviser.

What it doesn't do

So you know before you sign up.

  • In cookieless mode, a visitor who comes back on another day counts as a new visitor, so returning-visitor numbers are lower.
  • New sites use cookies by default. Each site you want cookieless has to be switched.
  • This isn't legal advice. Whether you need a banner depends on everything your site loads, not only analytics.

Questions people ask

Usually not for Datasense in cookieless mode, because nothing is stored on the visitor's device. Other tools on your site may still need one. Check with your own adviser.
