Track traffic sources and UTM campaigns
How Datasense attributes visits to referrers and UTM campaigns, how AI assistants like ChatGPT show up as sources, and how to tag your links.
Every visit is attributed to where it came from, once per session.
Referrers
A visit's source is the domain of its referrer, such as google.com or news.ycombinator.com. Visits without a referrer show as Direct.
AI assistants send referrers too. Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot show up under their own domains (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai…), so you can see how much traffic AI answers send you.
UTM parameters
Tag links you share with UTM parameters:
https://example.com/pricing?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october-launch| Parameter | Where it shows |
|---|---|
utm_campaign |
The Campaigns breakdown, and the campaign filter. |
utm_source |
Stored with each event; in exports and visitor profiles. |
utm_medium |
Stored with each event; in exports and visitor profiles. |
Revenue by source
When you attribute revenue, each payment is credited to the referrer and campaign that started the session, so the breakdowns show revenue next to visitors.
