Formbricks vs. Datasense: The Lightweight Survey & Analytics Alternative

Formbricks is an open-source survey platform: in-app, website, link and email surveys with targeting, segments and self-hosting. Datasense takes a smaller job: one- or two-question surveys on your site, with every answer tied to the visitor's location, device, profile and replay, inside the analytics you already use.

The short answer

Formbricks is the better tool if surveys are a big part of your work, or you want to self-host. Datasense is the better tool if you want a quick question on a page and the answer next to your traffic, without another tool or script.

Pick Datasense if

  • You want surveys and web analytics from one script tag
  • You want each answer linked to the visitor's profile and replay
  • You only need short surveys with one or two questions
  • You want surveys on a free plan with no response cap

Pick Formbricks if

  • You need long surveys, branching logic or link and email surveys
  • You want to self-host an open-source tool
  • You need targeting by user attributes and segments

What's different, in plain words

Surveys inside your analytics

A Formbricks answer lives in Formbricks. A Datasense answer sits next to the visitor's country, device and profile, with their source, pages and payments, and links to their session replay when one was recorded.

Short vs deep

Datasense forms have up to 2 questions: stars, a choice or text, shown on page load, scroll, click or exit intent. Formbricks has many question types, logic, recontact rules and link surveys. Pick by how much you need to ask.

Open source

Formbricks is open source and self-hostable, which matters if you need full control. Datasense is a hosted service and isn't open source.

Pricing

Formbricks Cloud is free for 250 responses a month, and Pro is $89 a month billed monthly ($74 billed yearly) for 2,000 responses. Self-hosting the Community Edition is free. Datasense forms are on every plan, including the free one, with analytics: free up to 5k events, $9 a month for 50k, and $49 a month for 200k.

How to switch from Formbricks

It takes about five minutes, and you don't have to turn anything off on day one.

  1. Step 1

    Add the Datasense script

Create a free account and paste one script tag into your site's <head>. Leave Formbricks where it is for now.

  2. Step 2

    Run both for a week

Compare visitors, top pages and sources. Datasense often shows more visitors once the proxy is on, because ad blockers stop blocking it.

  3. Step 3

    Remove Formbricks

When you're happy, delete the Formbricks snippet. Export your old data from Formbricks first if you want to keep it.

Questions people ask

For short on-site surveys, yes. If you need long surveys, link or email surveys, or self-hosting, Formbricks does more.
